Get To Work

2 Peter 1

Our first passage in 2 Peter just had my heart on fire!  What an encouragement Peter is!  Did you know that God has granted you “all things that pertain to life and godliness”?  Did you know that through this grant of His we can become partakers of the divine nature – God’s own nature?  No?  Look at this.

2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV

“[3] His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, [4] by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”

We have escaped the corruption that is in this world because of sinful desire.  Do you live that way?  Do you live the truth that you have all things that pertain to life and godliness?  Do you live the truth of a partaker of God’s own nature?  Why not?  God has given it to you – that is if you truly submitted your life to Christ.  Peter tells us to do the following since we have been granted this incredible blessing.

2 Peter 1:5-8 ESV

“[5] For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, [6] and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, [7] and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. [8] For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Do you see how active our faith is?  We are to cultivate virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love in ever increasing amounts so that we will be fruitful in our knowledge of Jesus Christ.  This is work.  All of this has been granted to us but we must tend to these precious gifts of God.  You will become the man God has re-created you to be because He has determined it to be so, but it will not happen with you sitting on the couch watching the game.  There is work involved and God will discipline you until you get it done.

Brothers, you have been given amazing gifts.  They were given to you for a reason.  Get to work.

Have a blessed day!

Your brother and servant in Christ,

Dying to self, living to serve!
