The Day Of The Lord Is Near Upon All Nations

Psalms 82–84

Storm Cloud with bright lightToday we hear much heated rhetoric excoriating the nation of Israel. It wasn’t long ago that Hosni Mubarak was deposed as President of Egypt.  He stepped down as president in February of 2011 and was quickly replaced by the Muslim Brotherhood – a group once again much in the news.  The United States of America almost immediately recognized the Muslim Brotherhood as a legitimate political entity.  The Muslim Brotherhood has been linked to terrorism and while in power in Egypt encouraged the persecution and massacre of Coptic Christians.  They also officially deny the right of Israel to exist.

This organization is not alone in its desire to see the end of Israel.  There are many in our own nation who naively, and wrongly, believe that the Middle East would be a peaceful place if only Israel didn’t exist.  There are multiple machinations abroad and at home attempting to force Israel into an indefensible position.  The stated goal of many in the Middle East is the complete annihilation of Israel.  It is pretty hard to make peace with folks who will only consider your death as an adequate peace offering.  This is nothing new as today’s reading demonstrates.

Psalm 83:2-4 ESV

“For behold, your enemies make an uproar;
those who hate you have raised their heads.
They lay crafty plans against your people;
they consult together against your treasured ones.
They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;
let the name of Israel be remembered no more!”

I would caution those who wish to jump on this malevolent band wagon with another passage from the Bible.

Obadiah 1:15 ESV

“For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations.
As you have done, it shall be done to you;
your deeds shall return on your own head.”

Earlier in God’s Word He informs us that He will bless those that bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel.  God keeps His promises so I for one bless Israel.  It is my hope that as a nation we will bless Israel as well.

Blessing Israel does not mean that we agree with everything the government of Israel does or doesn’t do; it doesn’t mean that they can do no wrong.  The government of Israel is made up of fallible, sinful human beings, just like every other nation in the world, including our own.  Denouncing bad behavior on the part of a foreign government is not the same thing as cursing that nation.  Dedicating yourself or your nation to the annihilation of another nation is the same thing as cursing that nation.  Blessing Israel can be as simple as wishing them well.  Regardless of how you feel about Israel, those that stand against her existence are worthy of even less support.

At the end of the day, however, all nations will be severely punished – including America.  God’s salvation is for individuals not nations.  Those that belong to Christ will be blessed and those that do not will be cursed.   The day of the Lord is near upon all nations and all individuals.

Have a blessed day!

Your brother and servant in Christ,

Dying to self, living to serve!
