Dying To Self, Living To Serve

Luke 9:23

The verse I’ve chosen for today is one of my great favorites.  To me it is the bottom line about living the life of a Christian.  In fact, the tag line for this blog, found at the bottom of every daily post, is derived from this verse – “Dying to self, living to serve”.

Luke 9:23 ESV

“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Tomorrow we begin our chronological reading plan that will take us through the entire Bible by January 3, 2015.  In my worldly self it is hard to make myself read the Bible every day.  Is it hard for you?  I hate to say that I have to deny myself in order to get in God’s Word every day.  I should hunger for His Word.  Reading the Bible is something I would rather do than anything else!  Unfortunately the world is full of distractions that fool me into thinking I’ve got too many more important or urgent things to do.  Such thoughts are lies.  To gain what God has given me I must deny the world; I must deny that part of me that is so easily distracted; I must follow after Christ.

Jesus knew the Scriptures backwards and forwards.  Sure, easy for Him, he wrote the whole thing anyway right?  Jesus was fully God while also being fully man.  He lived and walked in this world.  He had the base, worldly things to worry about that you and I worry about today.  He studied the Scriptures.  You want to follow Him?  Do as He did.  Learn the Scripture.  Live the Scripture.  To do so means denying your base desires and doing that which God has called you to do, even if doing so is not only uncomfortable but painful.  Hopefully reading God’s Word isn’t painful.  It may be inconvenient.  It may be uncomfortable at times but brother, take up your cross and follow Him!

Have a blessed day!

Your brother and servant in Christ,

Dying to self, living to serve!
